Plagiarism

When you begin a course of study, you’ll likely be warned about the dangers of plagiarism - but it’s unlikely anyone will explain to you exactly what plagiarism is and how best to avoid it.

What is plagiarism?

Here are some brief definitions of what would generally be regarded as plagiarism:

  • Plagiarism is - passing off someone else’s work as your own.

  • Plagiarism is - lifting quotes from sources without attributing them accurately.

  • Plagiarism is - quoting so frequently that the work is a compilation, not an original piece.

  • Plagiarism is – paraphrasing (putting someone else’s words into your own words) without giving credit to their ideas.

  • Plagiarism is - incorrect punctuation of citations so that it’s not possible to identify which words/ideas are yours and which belong to others.

  • Plagiarism is - asking a friend to write or contribute directly or indirectly to your work.

How to avoid plagiarism

  • Always list the source in the correct manner as you take notes

  • Note down all information about material you have found in the proper referencing style required by your school, college or university

  • Read back over your notes at the end of each research session to ensure that you have noted the source of any material you found

  • Develop your own referencing system when you make drafts – for example, use colour-coding to show at a glance what is your own work and what is quoted.

  • Be careful with punctuation.

  • Run your work through a plagiarism checker, such as Viper (www.scanmyessay.com) when it’s finished.

Using a custom essay is not plagiarism

If you choose to use a custom essay, great – you have the most powerful study aid available to you.  Don’t be tempted to use that power to cheat – treat the essay like a book or journal you found that answers your exact essay question.  That way, when you get a 1st class mark for your essay, you’ll know you earned it!

The fear of plagiarism should never prevent you from availing yourself of every academic aid available in the appropriate manner. You just need to understand the difference between consultation and copying and adhere to the rules very strictly.

The skills you gain from researching and writing your own essays will stay with you for life, and you should not risk losing out on this golden opportunity by plagiarising.  Ultimately, no-one gains from your actions and you will have shown yourself to be unworthy of the trust your academic institution has placed in you.
So, enjoy your education, take the above simple steps to avoid plagiarism and earn your education!
